The Sunday Ladies League is primarily a team entry league, individuals are welcome to register and the league convenors will do their best to help you find a team. We play 16 Sundays each season, including playoffs. Game times are at 4:30 and the schedule is posted in the League information annually. While we endeavour to play every other week, the schedule adjusts based on club events and special days. It is a great league to come out and play with the same ladies all year - a great way to improve your game.  Games are win/loss/tie and allow for rankings for playoffs where we award a League Champion.  The final play-off game culminates with a league dinner.

The Whitby Curling Club is proud to welcome participants and spectators to the 2020 CurlON Senior Provincials from March 16th - 20th, 2022.

The Whitby Curling Club COVID committee had numerous discussions about the Provincial Government's announcement to lift most COVID protocols starting March 1st. We've taken into consideration the recommendations from CurlON as well as putting the safety of our members and guests as the top priority when making these types of decisions.

The COVID committee has agreed to continue requiring that all members and guests be double vaccinated to enter the building.

Welcome to Hot Rockers Curling

The Hot Rockers Curling league is a fun and active league for adults with physical and/or developmental disabilities. We teach participants the sport of curling each week – in a safe and encouraging environment! Once the participants are comfortable with the basics, games will be played! Participants are typically on the ice for 1.5 hours, and then stay in the lounge to socialize with coffee or hot chocolate, afterwards. Supporters are welcome to attend and learn to curl as well, or just spectate!

Thanks to donations from the Whitby Senior Men's Curling Association, we can offer this league for free to participants. Registration in advance is required.

HotRockers 5 You will need to register in advance for the league. By registering, you are signing up for the season (October to April) so you do not need to register each time you come. It is expected that you will attend each week the league is offered (a schedule will be provided after registration) as the Whitby Curling Club will be preparing the ice for the number of participants who are registered.
There is some equipment required! Participants will need to wear flat soled sneakers. The Club has “grippers” for you to use each week which will go over top of your sneakers to ensure you don’t slip and fall on the ice. Participants are required to wear winter sport helmets (Ski or skating helmets). HotRockers 4

The Club also provides brooms for participants to use to “sweep” the rocks if they’re so inclined! Most of our participants use a stick to throw the rock (instead of lunging like you see on tv) and we have some available to use here too! We do have a pro shop as well if you want to purchase your own equipment.

Respecting your Ice Surface

1. Check your footwear: All shoes worn on the ice must be clean indoor shoes or curling shoes.  Clean and replace your grippers regularly to limit the amount of debris that gets transferred onto the ice surface.

2. Check your Broom head: If you use a club broom, scrub it before and after your game.  If you have your own broom change your broom head regularly.

3. Watch the Hack: Make every effort to prevent rocks from hitting the hacks. It can do a lot of damage and potentially impact your ability to continue playing your game. Skips and Vices should take this responsibility during games.

Bonus Tip: If you curl once a week change your equipment a minimum of once a year (gripper & broom head) if you curl three times a week change your equipment a minimum of three times a year (gripper and broom head).

Pace of Play

Are you always racing the bell to try and get your eight ends in? Try some of these tips to keep your game moving!

1. Arrival: Don't just be on time, be early and ready to go as soon as your sheet is ready.

2. Leads:  Always be ready in the hack. Grab your first rock and get into the hack while your teammates and the other team clean-up the rocks.

3. Rock clean-up: It doesn't need to be perfect. Put your rocks into their respective corners and keep going. As long as the rocks are out of the way (we don't want anyone tripping) that's good enough - trust me it'll save you some precious seconds!

4. Seconds/Front End: Set-up your Vice and Skips rocks in front of the hack to help keep the game moving.

5. Vices: If you have to look at rocks more than twice to see who is shot at the conclusion of the end, measure! Don't waste time humming and hawing - grab the stick!

6. Skips: Be decisive when it's easy. Try and have 1-2 shots in mind based on how the house is looking and what the other team is throwing. Sure sometimes you get a curve ball and are left scratching your head, so save your time for these moments.

How to Move Around on the Ice

On the back board: If you’re the skip or vice, stand on the back board at the playing end while the opposition is throwing. If you’re throwing next, stand on the back board at the throwing end.

Between the Hog Line: If you’re a sweeper and your team is NOT throwing, stand between the Hog Lines as close to the sideline as possible.

Inside the Hog Line: if you’re a sweeper and your team IS throwing, stand inside the Hog Lines ready to sweep.

Post Game Exiting the Arena: Look both ways before you cross a sheet! Is someone in the hack (close or far end)? If so, wait until they throw and then cross the sheet.
*Bonus tip: this etiquette tip also applies to Vices going to get the measuring device during the game - look before you cross a sheet.

Pre-game Etiquette

1. Be ready for your game to start: be in the lounge a minimum of 5 minutes before your game is scheduled to start

2. Know where you are going: Check what sheet you play on ahead of time
3. How do I know when to go out on to my sheet? When the numbers are taken down off the scoreboard, symbolizing by the ice maker that sheet is ready to go OR when the ice staff have finished and the nipper is off the ice
4. How do I enter the arena? You can use whichever door is closest to your sheet of play.  In the Winter, the far set of stairs on the Men's and Women's side respectively are for CURLING SHOES ONLY, this helps keep the ice nice and clean!
